THe Situation

When GangGang launched in 2020, founders Alan and Mali Bacon tapped Matinee to develop the identity for their new venture. In short time, GangGang emerged as a major player in the Indianapolis arts scene, earning national attention for Butter: its expansive, equitable art fair showcasing the work of more than 50 Black visual artists. In 2023, GangGang teamed up with Forty5 Presents on a new initiative. And, once again, they reached out to Matinee for visual identity support.

THe Solution

The new initiative was I Made Rock ‘n’ Roll: a Black rock festival promoting the key role that Black artists played in pioneering the rock genre, writing some of its most seminal songs. After meeting with the GangGang team and listening to local Black artists, we worked to create a visual brand that rooted in the history the genre and evocative of Black joy and celebration. The inaugural I Made Rock ‘n’ Roll festival kicks off in 2024 with Janelle MonĂ¡e as the headline act.
